Just after some advice about what i need to take with me, how much i should expect to pay, how not to appear like i havn't got a clue so they don't rip me off!!

Thanks:T

The maximum charge for an MOT as determined by the ministry of transport is £50.35 , you dont need to take anything with you unless you want the MOT post dating (it hasnt expired yet) in which case you need to take the old certificate with you. ;)

makes no difference at all  your legally allowed to drive it to the MOT test station so thats ok, and you dont need to take anything with you at all

As long as you have prebooked the test

Sorry if this sounds patronising, but you're not allowed to drive the car if it doesn't have an MOT, other than to go to a *prebooked* MOT. (that is to say you're not allowed to drive to the garage to book it...)

In terms of how not to look like a complete muppet, I wouldn't worry, I took mine in for the first time the other day. Said "I'm dropping my car off for an MOT. Call me if anything needs fixing for more than £50. See you later".

They don't ask many questions etc.

You might have been lucky but I wouldn't be surprised if some garages took that as a signal to find faults requiring £49.99 worth of attention ( easily done , they could say it failed on emissions and they did 45 minutes of diagnostics and found a faulty spark plug which they replaced ).

I'd say nothing and discuss any failures you may want the garage to fix when you return to collect the car.

as another thread on here somewhere suggested, why not try the council mot centres. they do not carry out repairs therefore have no incentive to fail the vehicle.

there's an article somewhere listing all the council sites. my local place in croydon does it for £44.
