    I occasionally get cheques from my mom in the USA, and I bank with Barclays. Basically the cheque is sent for "negotiation", then I get the money in 5 to 7 days. The fee is reasonable.

    Nationwide will cash USD cheques, well if you have a healthy bank account they will. They will charge £6.50 and clear them in as little as 4 working days.

    I think you will find this is negotiation WITH RECOURSE.
    If the cheque bounces they take the money back.

    No way is a foreign cheque ''cleared'' in 4 days.
