Changing of ID documents....what first??

Ok so I just recently got married and am in a pickle about what ID to change first....
I have MOT due on my car and the end of this month so would I still be abel to get the MOT done if I send off for a change of name on my V5C? And then will that cause problems if my driving licence isn't done yet?

It takes so long to get it all done as each needs my original marriage certificate! And no one rushes to get it done!

I've never had to produce either the V5C or a driving licence for my car's MOT; what makes you think you need them?

NB If you do send anything to DVLA, make sure you get a copy first, and send it recorded delivery.

you don't need to take anything in with your car to get it MOT'd, so I wouldn't even bother with that.

I'd do my bank details first (if you're going to change your name with your bank) because in my experience, once you've done that a lot of companies don't need your original marriage certificate to then change your name with them.
  • I got married in July. I did my bank accounts and mortgage first (they needed to see the certificate), then I phoned around and did all the bills and insurances (house and car, not life as they need my certificate), then I have done my driving licence which I am waiting for and then I will do my life insurance.

I did make sure though when we got married that I ordered 2 extra certificates- but the main one and one spare are somewhere safe and then I have one that I am using for sending off (which I still sent special delivery for my licence).

Slightly off-topic, but one document which often gets overlooked on marriage is the will - unless made in anticipation of marriage, it is automatically revoked on marriage, and will therefore have to be re-done.

Can't you just order another copy of your certificate?

The only place I needed to send it was the dvla for my driving license. Everywhere else I just wrote to. And the car registration whatsit has a form you fill in on the back and send off. And like others said they dont ask for anything when you get an mot done anyway.
  • It all seemed like a lot of unnecessary hassle and stress to me so i decided to keep the name I had :D

You can buy extra copies of your marriage certificate or get certified copies from a solicitor that are as good as the original. Some banks may also be able to make you certified copies.

  • No particular order to do the changes in but remember that until you update your passport any overseas travel would need to be in your pre-marriage name.
