RM compo...where do they get their figures from?

Just received a cheque from RM for an ebay item that went missing.

The claim was for £57.00, but they have refunded £48.20. Where do they get this figure from?

Being pedantic I'd say £46 plus £2.20 (second class up to 750g packet).

Also being picky, it's really not a good idea to send anything £50 plus via second class Royal Mail. With the difference lost you could have paid for a courier.

It was actually a Special Delivery item. The package went 'missing' when out for delivery. Sorry, should have mentioned it in the original post.

The irony is the buyer actually paid extra for postage to ensure she got it. She told me that there had been a spate of items being pinched from RM vans in her area. It then went missing! Couldn't make it up.

The value of the item was £51.00 plus £5.90 postage.

I know I am covered by SD so I can't work out the figures. However, the £46.00 plus £2.20 postage makes sense if it was sent ordinary post.

I'm assuming there's no proof of delivery and you could not defend an INR case.

Appeal the decision - RM usually give in to pester power.

No, it just disappeared into the ether. Didn't get to a case. The buyer new what happened to it, I just worked it out with her.

you say the buyer paid extra?
did you supply the auction listing as proof of value?
so it showed the postage with the extra paid?

Yes, supplied everything that's needed for a claim. Still eight quid down though

The whole process has been a joke to be honest.

Its supposed to take 30 days from when they receive a claim to when they pay out. I put a claim in on the 23 July and finally got the cheque today.

I had spoken to them on the phone after the 30 days had passed. They told me that they had requested information from the buyer, but she hadn't responded.

The buyer told me she replied to them the same day that she received the request for information. She was extremely grateful that I refunded without question, so she helped with the claim as much as she possibly could.
