New scam? Or known?

Received a telephone call yesterday, saying the caller represented a legal firm.
She wanted to know if I knew about people having to sell their homes, to pay for their care when they are elderly, and how did I feel about it. She then went on to say, that they wanted people to know about FREE legal advice on this subject, and could their man, who was in my area, make an appointment to call and see me.
When I asked "If this is free advice, how does your company recover the cost of you making telephone calls, and the cost of your agent travelling around giving it?"
Luckily, she realised that I was onto them wanting money from me in one way or another, so she made her apologies and hung up on me.

Has anyone else encountered this yet? And what are they offering in exchange for the money they try to get off you?

  • Sounds like it could just be a firm selling some kind of financial package / financial advice, and not necessarily a scam as such. Free advice would probably reccomend that you take out their products. Nevertheless, I would not want to invite them into my home on the back of a cold call.

Did you get the name of the company?

I heard it,but it went in one ear, and out the other because it was a cold call.
  • I get these all the time. It's a cold sales call but they don't like to admit it is a sales call. They just want to get a sales rep into your house who will try to talk you into spending loads of money (usually way above what you would spend if you shopped around).

These companies often prey on the elderly, because they tend to be easier to convince.
