The meter serial numbers and point reference number correspond correctly with records. My meter is outside but I can easily access it with a key.

Clearly, you have 'records' - most people don't! - keep talking to company A, and, most importantly, ask yourself what makes Company A believe that they will be your energy supplier from now until June 2013

It typically takes 4-6 weeks from application to switch supplier.
You couldn't have switched supplier until you had a supplier, and if you did attempt before then, this is yet more evidence such attempts usually end in tears.

What happened to Company C that no one seems to dispute you were supplied by from Summer 2011?

Or did you switch back to Company A after the fixed tariff offered by Company C expired in Summer 2012?

When you switched to Company C in Summer 2011, which company contacted you with the 'sorry you are leaving' message?

I phoned up company A and got my meter point reference number and account number from them (they had a record for me) and then requested the switch over. It was over summer so heating not on and very little gas used with company A. The Independent Gas Transporter has it on their records that I was with company C from summer 2011 but do not have it on their records that was with company B from August 2010. When I switched to company C in summer 2011 company B wrote to me to say sorry you are leaving.

Manager from company A phoned me today as wanted clearer explanation than was customer service operative gave me. It turns out I was not sent a bill but an Annual Gas Statement with estimates of what I used between 2010 and June 2012 and an estimate of what will use between June 2012 and July 2013. When I asked why this was the first yearly statement I received from them and why it covered the period since 2010 he said it could be down to National Grid not sending through the updates regularly as it should be. Anyway when cs operative said it was going to be escalated to generate a bill this was incorrect or so the manager now says, what should have been said was that it was being escalated to this manager to investigate and apparently should not have been told that would have to claim back from company B.

Anyway have to do some digging and gather together old bills and will be speaking to manager on Monday who says this sort of thing is rare but I just did not need this at all at the moment with my youngest unwell and my husband incapacitated after being knocked off his bike by another cycling but hey ho hopefully will get to bottom of it.

Thank you to everyone for all thoughts and help. It is much appreciated.
