I changed insurers this year (as standard) and went with Admiral, using all the comparison sites as per the guide. I ended up purchasing through TopCashBack at a premium of £348.74. This week, a month after the policy started, Admiral have brought to my attention that I omitted a single SP30 from my quote (they're quite right - I've checked and it was my error, probably caused by going through so many bloody quotes pages!) They realised this as all my other quotes around the same time had included it. Of note, I had disclosed my previous accident through the quote, and you'll have to take my word for it that this was a mistake, not a deliberate omission.

Admiral are charging me over £60 plus £18.95 admin fee for this - a 17% increase in basic premium. Two questions:

1. Surely the automated systems which picked this up would have known before now that there was a discrepancy; had it been flagged up immediately I assume I was under distance selling regs and had the 7 day cooling off period to cancel (of note, I purchased my insurance almost a month before it was due to start, so they had plenty of time to rectify the issue).

2. The additional charge seems excessive - is there any way to fight this? Admiral's website won't let me re-quote with my amended details, but a quick search on TopCashBack indicates they are £100 more expensive than other insurers. I've had Admiral to recalculate it, but unsurprisingly, they said they were right the first time!

Anyone else's experiences appreciated!

I think you'll just have to pay up for this year.

From their perspective, you have tried quotes with and without the SP30 and opted for one without. They cannot know that it was accidental. If they thought it was deliberate they may have just cancelled.

DS regs don't apply to insurance.

You can however usually cancel within 14 days of the start date or receiving the docs. When you got the docs you should've checked the details were correct so you can't really complain about them taking a month to find the discrepancy.
