On Friday 14th September I will be attending court to find out if my two year old son will be placed with me under an Interim supervision order as recommended by the local authority.
After this,I will be seeking a residence order to enable me to care for my son long term.
In preparation for a positive outcome I have had to resign from a part time role in the emergency services so i can care for my son.
As this resignation will cost me at least £600 gross per month I fully intend to claim as much as I can get off the government(something which I have never done since I left school thirty years ago)as I can get.Although this doesn't sit well with me,I believe I have no choice and to be fair,I can't be accused of not contributing over the years.

I am also employed full time and my parents have agreed to look after my son whilst I am at work.
I earn £21,000 per annum gross in my full time employment.

What benefits, financial support, tax relief etc. will I/my son be entitled to??

Thanks

When you are able to claim Child Benefit and Child Tax (sorry don't know if you need the order in place or if this can be done earlier), you will get £20 ish Child Benefit a week and Tax Credits.

On £21K you will get some tax credits - pop the details into a calculator to see what amount this gives. However, this is annual. So if you earn £21K from your current job and have from April to September earnt £5k from your second job - then you are at £26K which is the cut off, so in that situation you will get nothing until April when you can claim again.

The figures for Tax Credits are minus pension - so use your p60 figure after pension if this applicable.
  • As well as child benefit and possible tax credits, don't forget that the non-resident parent will be liable for maintenance this can be done through a private arrangement or make an application to the CSA :)
