the secondary school open evenings for this years year 6 will be happening later this month (ie next week and the week after most likely). Phone the ones you are interested in looking around and ask if you can attend the open evening. If they say No, ask for a suitable time for you and your son to visit the school.

Next year at this time you and your son will be invited to the local secondary school open evenings, as his preferences will then usually have to be submitted to the LEA by the end of October (if its like last years was).

Check your LEA website for information in your area, and the senior schools in your area's own websites too.

OK brilliant, is that the same for private schools?

private schools have their own admissions criteria I believe, so you should contact the school itself.

Are you in independent at the moment? We seem to have been issued with a timetable for the next 13 months :rotfl:

And aged 10 already in year 5, you must have a September boy :D

My son had a letter from school to say open evenings were being held in various schools from 20th september they operate an open door policy no need to make an appointment. Applications have to be done online by the 31st October.

Going from primary to secondary in our area, they arrange day visits to the local secondary school during year 5. You can go to open evenings at the school in the summer of year 5, they also have open evenings in September in year 6, but the forms have to be submitted in October that year.

If there are particular schools that you are interested in, I'd ring them and check how it works in your area.

By this I assume you have decided to do so? Or thinking about it?

You really need to get in touch with the senior school/s concerned to check application criteria and dates.
