 Could anyone tell me why you can't apply for a student loan if you have won a scholarship.
My Daughter is in receipt of a Dance and Drama Award which pays most of her College Fees (£10,000 per year). I still have to pay the top up fees and I also have a son at university and have to pay for his fees also but he lives at home.
She can't get help with living costs and her rent is £230 per month and food another £100 on top of that. She has a part time job working in pizza hut on a friday night because they won't employ Dance Students because of the amount of shows they miss work for so she is lucky there. I have to fork out the rest and I only earn 20,035. Can you tell me whether I am being really stupid and missing something here. Surely she must be able to claim something. She is training at a college in London and we live in the north west. I even have to pay for the travel home during the holidays because she never has the money to pay for herself. The cost of shoes etc is also a worry because they go through so many and they cost a fortune to replace. She can't go out very often because when she does earn some money she has things like the electric/gas or water bills to pay for. I'm already paying for her phone so I can keep in contact with her. Can anyone help me out there?

I'm not sure about this, but could it possibly be because of the nature of the course she's on? If it's not a BA/BSc/BEd or recognised 'degree' course, than I don't think that you can apply for a student loan ... I might be wrong here though. Also, how old is your daughter? If she's only 16/17, then again there could be an issue about her claiming a student loan.
If your daughter is really struggling, then does her college have any kind of financial assistance for their students, like an Access fund or any kind of hardship award? It's always worth asking about this kind of thing.0 -
I think that Gingernutmeg is right and she will be ineligible for a student loan unless she is studying for a degree. More information is available on this site:

It says that there's help with living costs on your income, so perhaps this isn't the scheme you're talking about. Have a look and let us know.0 -
maybe she is entitled for a student hardship loan if her uni/college does it?Named after my cat, picture coming shortly0
