NHS and white fillings?

I think a lot of it is down to your genes. I had one filling 20 years ago when I was carrying my son. I did not have a hole but a shadow (hollow tooth).
My son was born with no enamel on 4 of this milk teeth, which he had to have removed. That has been his only problem. Now aged 19 he has no fillings.
We eat a good diet and brush our teeth, but then so do thousands of others, who are not so lucky and often need treatment.0 -
I had a white filling ( I think !!) in a back tooth on the NHS on Monday, it was a replacement filling which was previously metally looking, but the new one is a very very pale grey colour, i'm not sure why I apparently have a white one now I thought it was just a change in procedure since I havent had a filling in over 10 years! Oh, and although i recall my previous fillings with a different dentist being extremelly painful, this one was a delightful experiance - I was sitting in the chair thinking this is quite pleasant!!! I think i must have hit on lucky with my change of dentist!0

I paid £48 in total, I had an extraction in my previous appointment as a had a wisdom tooth growing in wonky which was threatening to push other teeth out, and the filling, as well as a check up and scale and polish. It looks like a white one to me, I was only commenting to suggest that it may vary from area to area perhaps...0

Oh and i heard the dentist for "a white one" when the technician was presumably mixing the "ingrediants" at the counter0

For what it's worth I was at the dentist today getting white fillings put in. I was quoted £40 for each one but my dentist then decided to haggle (with herself?!) and I'm getting them for £30 each. I'm not on any benefits, these teeth are at the back of my mouth so don't qualify for NHS treatment.
If there are any other dentists near you I would see if they have spaces and then compare prices.when the first cup of coffee tastes like washing up she knows she's losing it0 -
Didn't we establish that you can't get white filling on the NHS on the back teeth??

We had established that until eliviajen's post.
I just don't know.
and stationaryace - £30? Jesus. I feel sick again.
So is that also on the NHS or is that just a super super cheap private job?
It appears that despite what was said earlier, some dentists WILL do white fillings on the back teeth under the NHS.0 -
The grey white filling is NOT a cosmetic white filling (composite) it is glass ionomer which is a different material, is not tooth coloured, has limitations and is suitable for some clinical circumstances in some back teeth on the NHS. Different types of holes in teeth require different materials.
Cosmetic tooth coloured (White) fillings are by and large NOT available on the NHS. The cost of them will vary according to size and time taken to do them. They take alot longer to do than ordinary fillings and require time and different materials and techniques. Most practices will charge from around £50 to £150 per cosmetic white (composite) filling depending on size , practice costs etc.
£30 is not a NHS price it is a private price but it may be a tiny filling in a practice with very cheap overheads.
In general you will not get a cosmetic White filling on a back tooth that involves the biting surface on the NHS.
No dentist will give you a quote for White fillings without having seen you and done their own check up because the price will vary according to the size of the hole and how long that dentist will take to do it.0 -
