Urgent Advice Needed: Overpayment by BG
BG billed me in excess of £2k for my May electricity usage but could only get £680 from my current account. I complained to
my bank who reimbursed £680 from the DDM guarantee.
I supplied BG with a new meter read and demanded that they should put things right. They then credited my account with £1200 and I assumed all would be well.
When I checked my August online state of affairs, I was confronted with a bill for £682.
When I complained I was told that they reviewed my account and found that they accidentally overcredited my account.
Are they entitled to claw this money back from me... am I liable?
Any advice most gratefully received.

How did BG manage to get £680 from your account if they attempted to collect over £2k? :huh:BG billed me in excess of £2k for my May electricity usage but could only get £680 from my current account. I complained to

You can't keep money that is not yours.0 -
I'm not entirely clear what your post suggests
They billed you for 2k + incorrectly?
They collected £680 via DD?
They credited your bank account or your British gas account with £1200?
You assumed all would be well. Either way, why / how? (if they billed 2k + & credited £1200 you'd have owed £800+ if they credited £1200 to your bank why did you think this was / what did you think had happened to your bill?)
If they paid £1200 to your bank account and you consequently owe them money for energy yes they are entitled to "claw it back". Why would you not be liable?0 -
They can request you return the money back as per the direct debit guarentee.
Here is the Direct Debit guarantee in full:
This Guarantee is offered by all banks and building societies that accept instructions to pay Direct Debit.
If there are any changes to the amount, date or frequency of your Direct Debit British Gas Trading Limited will notify you 10 working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed. If you request British Gas Trading Limited to collect a payment, confirmation of the amount and date will be given to you at the time of the request.
If an error is made in the payment of your Direct Debit by British Gas Trading Limited or your bank or building society you are entitled to a full and immediate refund of the amount paid from your bank or building society.
If you receive a refund you are not entitled to, you must pay it back when British Gas Trading Limited asks you to.
You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by simply contacting your bank or building society. Written confirmation may be required. Please also notify us.0
