Who is the owner?

How do I find out who owns a private road? I've searched on the land registry site but you need a house address.....

Presumably the road has a name? Can't you just search for number 1 on that street?
Note: Unless otherwise stated, my property related posts refer to England & Wales. Please make sure you state if you are discussing Scotland or elsewhere as laws differ.
  • Private roads don't usually have names.
Might help if you tell us why you want to know?
What matters most is how well you walk through the fire

Number 1 is owned by... the owners of number 1. They do not own the road.

Nor do the owners of numbers 2, 3, 4 or 5 (etc).

Yes, it does have a name. Reason is we (owners of properties on the road) want to contact the road owner to discuss maintenance.

edit: Think I've found the answer. Land Reg has a 'map search' function I didn't notice, and turns up a Title listing for 'Part of XX Mews and adjacent land" which I think must be it. Will register and buy (only £4!)

Glad you have found the right search function on the Land Registry website. You can use a street map, aerial image and other formats to identify the road and see if information is available online.

NB - do read the guidance entitled 'About this service' and view the examples provided so that you are aware of what type of information is available before registering and buying anything.

If the road is registered then a copy of the register (details of ownership) costs £4 online and a copy of the title plan (shows the extent of the ownership) is also £4. The plan will be important to identify the general boundaries of the registered title (if any).

Let us know if you find anything
