You need to store potato sacks in a rat free place, so outdoors may not be a good idea. Presumably you are thinking of in a shed? because they shouldn't get wet either.
I'm wondering in general where to put the veg including potatoes, now I have a smaller fridge. One of the sheds is going too, to be replaced by a summer house, part office for DH and part play area for kids, so the current brick outhouse will become home to kids bikes and there will possibly not be enough room for anything else in there.

I don't currently get the potatoes in sacks, but my friend who does, they come in a large brown sack and I was wondering where Gingham kept hers.:)

I keep mine in the utility room - bit cooler than the kitchen.
  • I keep my potatoes and carrots in their sacks, in the garage. You can get hessian sacks from some garden shops for about £1. These are excellent. Whether you keep the veg in the fridge or not, get the veg out of the plastic bags-whatever veg you have. Peel the nasty wrap off of cucumbers also-it makes them rot. I got rid of my veg rack as it made a lot of mess and stuff always got forgotten. The rest of my veg goes in the fridge inc onions. Fruit gooes in the fruitbowl except for grapes or if Ive bought way too much.

I've never kept potatoes in fridge I have them in a wire veg rack on top of and covered with old newspapers at top of cellar head under stairs with onions in separate rack where it's cool and dark. I keep all my other veg in my larder fridge and they keep very well for ages.

I used to use these from lakeland

I found them good, but bought the small ones by mistake last time so they were left unused in the cuboard. I have been throwing far too much veg away lately though so plan to start using again.

I'm going to dig out my veg rack from the loft today and put it inthe garage (we have an internal door from garage to hallway, so it should be reasonably convenient). I'm getting fed up with potatoes not lasting more than a few days in the house, so i'll pop them in an old cotton pilowcase out there and see if they fare any better. Same with onions.

I keep my veg under the kitchen sink in a plastic box that has holes in it. The usual under-the-kitchen sink stuff is under the utility sink which is next to the kitchen through an arch. I have one bottle of washing up liquid and spare dishcloths and scrubbers under the kitchen sink too. It has been lke this for a year and I have less rubber carrots than I did in the fridge!
I think this is something similar to what I'm going to have to do. We have a new conservatory which is part utility and has a worktop running all down one side where the the WM and TD now are.The sun is only on there in a morning, so it shouldn't get too hot either. We have a slimline storage unit, which has had some cleaning stuff in and again probably a better sort out would make it so it holds the majority of cleaning stuff. We also have a vanity unit under washbasin in bathroom, and with no bath toys now I can use the space for cleaning products and toilet rolls. There might be room in the new downstairs loo too, but since we are currently in process of re-decorating each room, I can't say for sure yet.

Where did you get your plastic box with holes in it from?

We don't have a garage, so that option is out, but pleased to hear you haven't come across any problems keeping your veg under the sink.

zippy - I used to have a problem with veg going off in fridge, till I started lining salad crisper with kitchen roll. You could give that a try first.

Gingham, where do you store the potatoes in their sack, outside?

Behind the piano in the dining room. :D

I got my veggie rack from Argos it was a stainless steel one to match my new kitchen and sits in the corner of the kitchen. I don't think it was very dear ,but I also have a fibre sack that I bought from the Bettaware catalogue which is very good and keeps spuds for a good while

I have a veg rack under the sink for potatoes and onions (seperate sections) I keep carrots etc in the fridge in one veg drawer and salad stuff in the other. I buy fresh each week so it doesn't get a chance to rot.
