Insurance in my name, but car not?

Hi there

I got my car insurance sorted this week, paid and all, and received the documents this morning. I use my partners car, he is the registered owner and keeper, tho I am the main driver and have taken insurance out in my name only.

At the time of quotation, the advisor asked me about the ownership details, I told him of the above situation, to which he said he would do the quote based on the fact that I owned the vehicle, as it was much more clear cut to price, and that it was a simple and free thing to change on the V5 form.

I never thought any more about it since I was only getting quotes at that stage and when I phoned back to take the insurance, I forgot completely about it, plus it wasnt one of the questions the advisor asked to confirm.

Is this a problem? I intend to call this afternoon when I get home from work but I just wanted to gauge opinions first.

Thanks

  • It is a problem at the moment if you have mis declared who the owner and keeper is.

To change it with the insurer you will probably be charged an administration fee of up to £50. Obviously you could get your partner to give you the car and notify the DVLA so that the info is correct but wether your partner wants to give you a car or not is another question

Both our cars are owned by my wife (no real reason, just so I could drive them home when we bought them).
It's never caused any problem, or loaded the premium.
As you stated the facts when you took the quote, I would be reluctant to pay for the amendement, and not be happy if they try to rasie the premium either.
The suggestion to change the v5 is ok, but to counter that, it adds another owner to the car, so not many people will take that route.

If there is any arguement over what was said, ask them to listen to the recording of the conversation for the quote.

Remember that the V5c form has nothing to do with who owns the vehicle as all it does is provide details of the Registered Keeper; i.e. the person responsible for ensuring that the vehicle is taxed, insured, Mot'd, etc. The new V5c forms now clearly states on the front: "This Document is not Proof of Ownership". Ownership is normally the person who's name is on the Bill of Sale / Invoice and who can demonstrate that they paid for the vehicle.

    We have a mixture:
Car 1: Owner, RK, Main Driver, Policy Holder - me, my wife is a Named Driver.
Car 2: RK, named driver, Policy Holder - me, my wife is the Owner and Main Driver.
Car 3: Owner, RK, Main Driver - me, My wife is the Policy Holder and Named Driver.

We ended up with this after getting the 3rd car and it was our insurer that suggested doing it this way as it gave us the best deal. After the phone calls to sort it out we did confirm everything in writing just to be safe.

The V5c does say that, but it's usually impossible to prove who the owner is.

My wife's name is on the v5.
Her name is on the bill of sale.
She paid with a credit card off my account, and a debit card from a joint account we both pay into, but mainly funded from a transfer in from a savings account in my name.

We could still gift it verbally to the other on the spot, if we ever worked out whose it was.

As far as most people are concerend the v5 is enough proof, unless the real owner can show otherwise (such as a finance company)

And if you're married, for car insurance, it's enough either of you claim to own it.

    Thanks everyone for your replies.

I'll phone them today to see what the craic is then.

I have no interest in changing the details on the V5 form, as was stated, it adds another owner to what is currently a one owner from new car.

I've always wondered why this makes a difference for insurance, but I suppose its just another one of those questions they have to ask.

It will encourage me to take more notes when making these type of phonecalls, as with so many calls and online forms to be completed, I only took a note of the price and lost track of who asked what questions (some asked the question about ownership, some didnt).

Hopefully they'll change it without charge, seeing as the insurance doesnt actually start until next week.

    Thanks again everyone

This does seem to indicate that they only allow the owner to be the policyholder.

As has already been advised the V5 doesn't show the "owner", and this agent may have been making life easy for himself to get a sale (and the commission).

(He of course won't be around if you need to make a claim and they void your policy because you have wrongly claimed to be the owner.)

You shouldn't need to take notes - just base quotes on your actual circumstances and you can't go wrong. Don't let them change things to suit their quote system.

    Hi all
    Just thought I'd update you

Called insurance company on Monday, asking them to rectify mistake on cover note.
Unfortunately, none of their companies would provide cover under these circumstances, and so their options were to change the name of the registered owner to me, or cancel the existing policy and reissue in my partners name.

Neither of which I wished to do and so I have had to cancel the policy outright and search again for new quotes. A hassle I know, but I'm glad I re-read the policy notes before its started.

  • Why don't you just insure in your partners name, have you down as a named driver and also the main driver of the vehicle. This way the insurance would be rated on you and not your partner.
