where is best for deals on high prescription thin lenses?

My existing glasses are beyond repair (the frame cracked suddenly, one lens fell out and smashed). I am short sighted (around -7.5/-8) and in the past have spent crazy money to get the thinnest lenses, but that's out of the question now. I want to get the thinnest lenses possible at the cheapest price: should I be looking online for this or should I go to Boots/specsavers and the like, perhaps see if I can upgrade lenses instead of their second pair of glasses free?

Is it wise to use online glasses retailers for such a high prescription?

I will probably go to a good local opticians for a check up as I do wear lenses occasionally (a lot now I am without glasses) and am due for an eye MOT. I have made a note of the dimensions of my existing glasses and aim to find similar.

Thank you for any advice!

  • My husband has nearly the same prescription and he has used various opticians over the years but has found that Specsavers are the cheapest with just as good quality. He gets really cool glasses with the thin lenses ( and you get two for one so he gets the prescription sunglasses) and so much cheaper than anywhere else and he also gets his contact lenses there too. They have a scheme for the contacts that you pay £10.00 a month and the lenses are posted out. Hope this helps
Every sixty seconds you spend angry, upset or mad, is a full minute of happiness you'll never get back.. :p:p
  • Thanks! I am trying to calculate the various online deals as well as those from high street opticians and it is actually quite difficult to work out who has the best deal on getting very thin lenses. My mission continues!

    Hi :)

Ok, I am as blind as a bat (prescription -9 so worse than you) and get my glasses from Asda. They include extra thin lenses in the cost. Glasses are £50 or designer ones just now are £70 each or 2 for £90.

I also get my lenses from Specsavers so entitled to a free pair but they charge £80 on top for extra thin lenses so not worth it imo.

I don't think you'll beat asda in terms of ability to view items "in the flesh" and rock bottom prices for extra-thin lenses. Am very pleased with the quality of mine, and the 2-for-nearly-1 allowed me to cheaply experiment with a new style of frame which I never dared try at £400.
  • Thank you Destiny33 and Gwapenut. There's an asda opticians near my in-laws so I think that will be my next stop.

I am due an eye test and am wondering whether to go to asda for that too - if you did, were you pleased with it?
  • And also, how thin is "thin" lenses? On the (not very comprehensive) asda website it says "thinner" lenses as standard included depending on prescription - do they have offers to get super thin lenses for an additional payment?
  • I'm a -8.00 and I get mine from selectspecs.com
You wait a while to get them but for £10 for frame and lenses it's worth it - and that includes free thin and light lenses. (You can pay extra for thinner ones but nothing like the high street charges) I've never had any problems and have had 5 pairs of glasses from them so far. x
  • thank you: I shall have a look at them.

Is it right that the thinnest lenses are 1.74? (showing my ignorance)
  • Tesco Opticians are offering free sight tests at the moment. You can walk away with your prescription afterward - there's no obligation to buy glasses from them.

I've been happy with SelectSpecs before so I've gone with them again for my new pair of glasses. My prescription is -7.25. I ordered 1.56 index lenses, free with the £10 frames. My order was a little more expensive because I wanted photochromic lenses, but without that, the glasses come in at £14, shipping included. Bargain.

    Hi :)

On your prescription (anything above -6 i think) it would be the 1.74 lenses which i think are the thinnest available? Exactly the same as Specsavers wanted to charge me £80 for!

Good luck with your glasses. I will be picking my glasses up from Asda today/tomorrow so will let you know!
