    I hate baskets!

The OH always tries to picks one up.. then guess who the sucker is that has to carry it? And then pay at the end? :@

Wish our local ASDA would do away with them - now I often insist I will carry items in my arms.. although I do end up getting to self service with items hanging from my ears & balancing on my head - but still save a few quid :-

  • We went to aldi yesterday and the man in front unloaded his shopping onto the belt then took the basket to the other side of the till to pack his shopping into after it had been scanned. there was a man serving on another till who saw this and shouted "excuse me, you can't take your basket past the till" to which the customer said "are you being serious?" to which the man replied a deadpan "yes", so he a bit meekly then put it back and paid for his shopping, before moving to a ledgy bit to put all the stuff into bags, where he stood the whole time we were being served.

as we were being served our till girl and the other till man were laughing and saying "are you being serious" loudly to each other. I informed the girl that the customer was standing a few feet away and could likely hear everything they were saying. she then looked a bit embarrased and told me they were talking about someone else but I thought it was really rude of them and disproportionate - how are customers supposed to know they can't take the baskets past the tills?! I thought the whole idea was you took the basket then went out of the way to pack it into bags?

The normal procedure when you're using a basket is to place your items on the belt, put the basket away, and then pack the goods into your bags as the checkout operator scans them.

I can usually manage this so that I'm only a couple of seconds behind the operator so I clear the checkout as soon as I've entered my pin and the receipt has been printed.

I'm not clear why the customer didn't follow this procedure, or how he managed to get all his items to 'a ledgy bit' without a basket.

Having said that, if I had been in his position I would either have ignored the jobsworth or told them to get the manager.

This is how it's done in Aldi's and Lidl's:

When I used a Lidl's (admittedly with a trolley), I simply packed my bags as the operator put (note, put, not threw) the items in said trolley. Then paid when I was finished. (As I said, about two seconds after she'd finished scanning.)

Even so, I'm still a little puzzled as to how the victim in MarywooYeah's post managed to move things to a 'ledgy bit' to pack them without a basket. Where was the operator putting his items if he had neither a basket nor a trolley?

I must admit that I'm not that familiar with Lidl's but it's hard to see why, if they actually have baskets, this one person had a problem when, presumably, others don't.

  • Anyone remember Netto?

My local store (before it became ASDA) had a problem with people stealing the baskets, when they opened, they had 200, gradually it dwindled down to about 6...They took delivery of another 200. Yep, you guessed it. Every single basket vanished within a week.

A few weeks later a friend saw someone selling netto shopping baskets on a carboot sale for £3 each. He had a transit van full of them...

So....maybe thats why the store manager in 'marywooyeah's post was serious about letting the guy with the basket walk away with it...he would of got to his car, opened the boot and just placed it straight in, never returning it.

(apparently, a lot of people use them for laundery or gardening...)
