First V Standard on a train
Comments

First class is 2+1 seating, well spaced out, with (sometimes) free coffee and snacks
Standard is 2+2, fairly cramped, particularly if the train is full (but not as bad as a charter airline).
I don't feel first is worth double the fare, but it's your money.0 -
The last time I went on a train (February I think) I paid for a standard ticket and sat in first class. When the ticket inspector comes round, tell him you'd like to upgrade, and it'll only cost you an extra tenner.
I think this is only permitted on weekends though...but worth checking out.If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

1st is generally free of bawling kiddies and hoodies with MP3 players from which you can enjoy 'tssch, tssch, tsssch' for hours on end.0
