First V Standard on a train

I am planning on travelling from Devon to Essex in May and have the choice fo £27 standard fare or £53 first class fare. I don't have much experience of trains so could someone tell me the pros and cons of each class.

First class is 2+1 seating, well spaced out, with (sometimes) free coffee and snacks

Standard is 2+2, fairly cramped, particularly if the train is full (but not as bad as a charter airline).

I don't feel first is worth double the fare, but it's your money.

The last time I went on a train (February I think) I paid for a standard ticket and sat in first class. When the ticket inspector comes round, tell him you'd like to upgrade, and it'll only cost you an extra tenner.

I think this is only permitted on weekends though...but worth checking out.

1st is generally free of bawling kiddies and hoodies with MP3 players from which you can enjoy 'tssch, tssch, tsssch' for hours on end.
