  • I have a flannelette fitted sheet for winter and last year also put a fleece between it and the mattress. That, along with my double duvet meant that I was as warm as toast.
  • I am another with a duvet on the bottom and top.....Toasty :D

Its worth noting, when making a decision about heating over night in any case, that research shows we actually get a better quality of sleep when a bit cooler

Personally, i like a very cool/cold bedroom, and a warm bed. I feel this makes doing things that might sistract me from sleep...reading too long, fiddling with the radio etc etc, less 'inviting ' and jsut laying still and warm in my little cocoon of warmth really helps me drift off and stay there!

Like others, I put older duvets underneath in the winter but still have one of those quilty things with ties at the corners as well as enclosing the whole mattress in an old king sized duvet cover. I couldn't sleep with just a sheet between me and the mattress, it's so uncomfortable and also seems so unhygienic - yet both my children just use sheets on the mattress - one of them has a bad back, I'm sure the mattress must be permanently ever so slightly damp.

When camping we always knew that you would stay warmer with more insulation underneath than on top, the same applies in bed at home I reckon.

I frequently have ice on the inside of the windows, well it's a bit like double glazing isn't it - and my electric blanket has stayed on the bed all this summer. Never yet woken to snow on my pillow though!
  • Wilkinsons have fleecy mattress protectors. Double is £8 and single is £6.
I use them and think they are very good.

we are underbody duvet types too and no heating in the bedroom at night - the cushioning really helps my bad back too as it provides both support and relief along with the extra warmth

We simply use a double blanket we bought cheaply from the charity shop.

  • Have put old duvets on both beds today, really looking forward to going to bed later to see how warm it will be! Many thanks for all the replies x

:) I'd recommend them - very cosy. My family has them for all beds and they come out in the very cold weather. Ours were just cheapies off the market, synthetic polyester "sheepskin" but very warm and easy to launder. Have lasted many winters already and showing no signs of giving up the ghost.

I'm another who likes cool rooms and snuggly beds, hate to have a heated bedroom.

An old-style way of getting the same result was to put a cellular blanket under the bottom sheet, and a blanket under you is a really old camping trip. It all helps.
