No windows in office

Some members of my team are having their office renovated as part of big work going on in their clinic. They're being housed upstairs in a portakabin at the moment, which was bad enough, until they saw their "new" room. It has no windows, having instead a skylight high above their desks. We've been working in the new office for a few days doing some temporary work which couldn't be done in the portakabin. It's awful having no windows :o

Are there any rules and regulations around our workspace having to have windows?

TIA

Shouldn't think so at all. I worked in what was a corridor a year or so ago along with 2 Exec Secretaries... no direct light at all!

I don't think so, otherwise people wouldn't be able to work in bunkers

None whatsoever. Regulations govern the workspace, workstation and safety but not the right to a window. There is evidence that people are more contented working in an environment with good natural lighting but its not required that you have windows.

Ah well. Just glad it's not my office as it would drive me mad!

    Thank you.

There are some people where I work who have to work in what we call the submarine, no windows, no mobile signal. This is not temporary it is their permanent work area.

I work in a sealed box in the top of a fridge we have a few windows but not many and they are high up.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

I had to work for 10 years in an open plan area of a school which only had skylights and no outside windows. Children were expected to use similar communal areas throughout the building. This was the building design (built in the 1970s) so I would say no, no regulations to cover this.

Sometimes I felt like a mole not seeing proper daylight for most of the day!
  • I worked for a few years once in a basement with no windows (no sky lights) and no air con and no loo (had to go out the office to use the loos in the building behind us)

I once went for an interview with a local education authority, who were housed in an old school. The office for this particular department was in the old changing rooms - no windows and all of the showers were still on the walls. Fortunately they had turned the water off ...
  • I think I need to stop moaning don't I?! Those sound far worse than ours :-(
