Am happy to report that Dave is ok!! We bought a swim bladder treatment and added it to the water and he's pretty much back to normal! Thanks to all of you for your advice and comments.

i cant stress enough the fact of cleaning out a filter will do more harm than good.you may thinks its best to clean it out because its dirty, but infact that waste in the filter is building a bacteria coleny that is processing the ammonia-nitrite-then onto lesser harmfull stuff call nitrate wich fish rarely get affected by if its at a safe level.

the 50P shape tanks are NOT suitable for a veriety of fush, its basically a foot wide by 2 foot tall fish dont swin up and down but left and right.

if your going to clean out a filter you best of doing it in a bucket of decloranted water and squeegy the sponge in it and get the bits off in its own dirty water (that way you dont lose all that Good bacteria).

a 3ft tank would house approx 3 standard size gold fish, with a over kill filter (external like a eheim pro 3 filter) because these guys are extremely sensetive gone are the days where they were they used to be hardy fish, now you should treat them as if they were porcelien china of a 300 years old.

kept in the right conditions a gold fish can last years my last gold fish lasted approx 9 years when i was younger from the shows, he was in a tank of his own by the end a 4ft and seen many new tank mate come stay and go.

As atrixoblue states again,(and myself and others) if you don't get a bigger tank and carry out proper maintenance of the filter and the water, your fish will go downhill again before long and no amount of medication will save it.Goldfish can suffer for a long time befiore they die and often once it really shows up it is too late to save them.
