Double debiting of funds...

Does this happen to anyone else? Four times this year I've had organisations take money as authorised but also 'mark' another payment, usually identical so that I can't access it. I run my account pretty close to the mark so I know exactly what I should be able to get out and when. First time it happened was with Asda just before Christmas.. they debited my online shop but mysteriously 'marked' another payment almost as big which meant I had no money for extra Christmas bits. As it was the first time I'd encountered this issue I thought it was fraud so cancelled my card and had nothing till the middle of January while a new card was issued.

Since then it's been Sainsbury's, my council tax payment taken twice and today I discover Next have taken my online payment from my account plus marked a further payment. After speaking to my bank (Co op) it seems this happens with online transactions if the order has to be amended slightly thereby triggering 2 payments. He couldn't explain though why I only have to put my Visa verification into the computer to authorise ONE payment! Apparently, it's what a lot of companies do. Plus, I have to wait up to 10 working days for it to be credited back to me!!

I can't afford to keep a spare £100 in my account just in case... is there anything I can do to stop this? Is it a new thing or am I just unlucky? Blerdy infuriating ......

Try a different bank which doesn't take 10 days for authorisations to drop off?
