Anti virus / backup

I've currently got McAfee anti virus and norton ghost but both are due to run out. What are the best free alternatives and do I need to remove these programs when they have expired.

Useless x;)

Do your own research, as has been suggested, but I get good results from AVG anti-virus (free edition), and it has been well reviewed recently.

Are you sure Ghost runs out? There are no regular updates here, just bugfixes and new versions every year. I believe it should continue to work?
