Santander don't have old A&L details

I took out a car loan with Alliance & Leicester in June 2006 for £10,000. I'm not sure if I was sold PPI or not. So I wrote to Santander asking them to send me the paperwork. They replied after about a month saying the loan quoted 'was not taken up'. I then phoned them asking them to send me the details, they said they don't have them anymore.
Can anyone advise me what I can try next?

this doesn't answer your question but it may help a little bit.
I worked at A/L in 2009 on a PPI repayment project. At the time they had to write to everyone who had taken out a personal loan with PPI between 2005 and 2009 so in theory they should have written to you at the time if you had taken a loan with PPI. Two possibilities spring to mind - have you moved house and missed the letter, or are you sure you took PPI with the loan?
The project started after A/L were fined something like £7m for mis-selling PPI by the FSA and judging from some of the stories I heard whilst there the fine was definitely justified.0 -
I'm not sure whether I took PPI out with the loan which is why I wanted to get hold of the paperwork. Do you think I can make a claim anyway?0

I've had a similar reply from Santander, ive just gone back online and looked back at bank statements which gave me a reference number. Might be worth a try.0
