Thats an awful lot and I would be seeking an explanation from him. No-one is in a position here to pass judgement on him without hearing what he has to say after you have had that discussion with him. Apart from anything else he shouldn't be spending your money without your say so first but thats a different argument.

that could be the problem the size of your tiles, the bigger the tiles the more wastage, especially around windows etc have you measured the room yourself 33 tiles = aprox 19.87 m2 10 more tiles = 6.02 m2 so do you know how many meters of tiling you have in your bathroom ? but yes an extra 6m does sound alot, i hope he is using bagged adhesive as well & not tubbed stuff ?I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0 -
^^^^ maths are wrong
tiles are .6m x .6m so each tile has an area of .36m2
33 tiles so 33 x .36m2 = 11.88m2
10 tiles = 3.6m2
so you had 11.88m2 of tiles what are the measurements for your walls?
its unfair to suggest that he is pulling a fast one there are plenty of reasons why more tiles can be needed. some examples:
cuts on both sides of the corner of wall are too small to be used elsewhere- you could lose upto a third for each tile so on an average 2.4m wall you could lose up 1.6m2 of tiles in one corner!.
awkward cuts-cabinets, windows etc.
are the tiles patterned/stone has a contour that appears on all tiles as this can lead to cuts being unable to be used elsewhere and possibly a lot of tile wastage depending how the pattern/effect lands.
breakages.
somebody measuring up only visible area and the fitter tiling complete walls-section under bath that will not be seen...
the list goes on
have you seen/counted how many tiles have been used?
if the full amount is there its all down to how the tiles go up on the wall so unfortunately id say its unfair to try and make them pay for it as that will take away/wipe out their wages and end up in a bad argument
look at it this way if they had put the extra 10 on you would have questioned it and refused the amount to be ordered its only on the installation that it has came to the point that there is a shortage so the tiles need to be ordered.0 -

Your reasoning is exactly why you purchase a minimum 15% more than the measured area in the first instance except the one about tiling under the bath. Noone does that - its a total waste of time and materials unless the floor under the bath is visible. SC is correct the bigger the tiles the greater the wastage.
But you are correct that it is unfair to hammer the guy without an explanation being sought.

some people do tile behind the bath depends wether or not they want the room tanked
and i was pointing out the correct amount of meterage bought and asked what is the area that they are having tiled
and i do know that there is more wastage in big tiles hench why i pointed out the reason of being able to lose 1.6m2 in just one corner of a room0 -
Oh you are assuming walls. I'm not - I'm assuming floor which is why I said under the bath . 12m^2 is far too small an area to be doing the walls IMO and in any event 600 x 600 on a wall needs a seriously flat wall in the first place and a skilled tiler to do it if its not going to look pants.
I agree with you about wastage on silly little cuts thats one reason you don't want silly little cuts the second being that it will look awful in a small room and thats where the skill in laying out comes in in the first place.
Tiling the wall behind the bath is not the pro way to do it although yes, I know some people do do it.

lol i assumed wall never even considered it being for the floor
thinking about it 600's are a bit big for a wall and possibly for a floor in a small room0 -
I've had a go at measuring - not sure how accurate I am as obviously tiling is not my trade! I measure the area that has been tiled so far as 8 metres squared and tried to be generous with my measuring (eg I've counted the window in the "covered" area even though it's not). So if there were 12 metres squared of tiles ordered originally and they've all been used, I'm not sure where the other 50% has gone.
Also, I've had a go at counting it in a different way, ie counting each tile (each part of a tile that is more than half the size of a whole one, I've counted as a whole) and come to a total of 25, so not sure where the other 8 whole tiles have gone.
I'm just worried that there have been lots of breakages or they've not been planning carefully with the layout. The job that's been done so far looks really really good, and yes, they are tiling the walls with the large tiles. However, if I'd known from the start that we needed 43 tiles instead of 33 I would have thought more carefully about the budget!
There is currently no bath, basin or any other furniture in the room so it's quite easy to see what's actually been tiled.
ETA: Forgot to mention 12m squared was just for the lighter colour tile for which they had to order 10 extra. We've got another 8m squared of another colour of tile and they have ordered 2 extra of these (310 x 610 in size so not much extra, really)0 -
^^^^ maths are wrong
tiles are .6m x .6m so each tile has an area of .36m2
33 tiles so 33 x .36m2 = 11.88m2
10 tiles = 3.6m2
yes my apoligies i'm not sure what i was thinking, my long division obv isn't what it was all those yrs ago at school.
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

He said they broke two (£50 worth - eek!) which I guess is understandable. Still can't see where the rest have gone but guess will just pay it for an easy life and put it down to experience...0
