Charges on a bank account that was closed three years ago!

I have had two accounts with the Halifax one which i closed three years ago in my local branch. I wrote a cheque out which was obviously later cashed by the receipient however what i didnt realise was that i had used my old cheque book as the book for my old account and new account are identical and i had mixed them up which was obviously my mistake. However, the bank cashed the cheque and i am now facing hundreds of pounds of overdraft fees i have already paid £230 into the account. Im terrible for putting things off and i know i shouldve rang them and sorted it sooner but to be honest i burried my head in the sand. Despite all this i dont believe the bank should have processed the cheque? Please help!

Speak to the bank and get the two accounts consolidated into one. If they've cashed a cheque you have recently written on the account, then it doesn't sound like you closed the account 3 years ago.
When closing an account, the bank usually wants the cheque book back, or an indemnity from you should you not be able to provide it.
Ensuring you only have one account and cheque book will prevent such mistakes happening in future
How exactly has one cheque that took you over the available balance resulted in "hundreds of pounds of overdraft fees"? :huh:0 -
Thank you for the reply but i closed the account three years ago and want it closed still i want to know if they can process a cheque on an account which was closed?0

account was closed 3 years ago. When did you issue the cheque and when did the bank pay it ? Did the bank continue to send you statements for the closed account ?
(I say closed because that is what you instructed your bank to do. Sounds like they got it wrong).0 -

Which you should never do.
Was the account actually closed or did you just bring it to a nil balance and left it unused (i.e. did you go into branch and actually close it i.e. went in and handed your cheque booka and cards in and got a closing statement). I suspect it wasnt closed and as you have a second account running they have paid it on the basis of your internal credit ratingI am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). I went down to the bank and closed the account handed my card in which they took off me and shredded when I signed the document to say the account was closed. I have since received no statements or new cards etc since that day.0

For the cheque to be paid from that account would require it to still be open. Can you verify that it was the old account that was activated and not from your account you still use?
What have the bank said when you raised it with them?I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. Thank you for the comments I have since been down to the bank who admitted they never actually closed the account and they were at fault for processing the cheque they have cancelled all charges and refunded any money I have paid in aswel as a good will payment. They are also going to get intouch with the CRA to ensure my credit rating has not been affected. So a positive ending
