SORN at wrong address.....

Options
Hi there, wondering if anyone can put my mind at rest.....

Received a letter the other day (Acknowledgement of SORN) - addressed to my address, not to me but to someone I know (friend of a relative....) Hope that makes sense.

Anyway, this person used to run a business from my next door neighbours property, but moved about 3 years ago. The SORN is valid from 1st sept 2012. In the past I have received mail for them and just passed it on to them. Then I started passing mail on saying "you should really change addresses' and now I just return mail to sender marked "Not Known at this address" However with DVLA stuff you can't do this so I opened the letter and got so royally p**d off I phoned the DVLA and asked them to remove my address from any association with this vehicle. They asked me to send the acknowledgement letter back with a covering letter stating that the vehicle is nothing to do with me and then they can investigate further (mentioned it could be possible fraud!)

Anyway, my question is this...... what will the DVLA do now? I'm slightly scared as this person who registered the car is not the most squeaky clean character in the world but can't understand why he would use my address??? Perhaps I'm worrying unnecessarily but worried the DVLA will tell him who's reported him

the idea of sorn is so the authorities know where the vehicle is parked up
in this case as you summise its not parked up at the sorn address so sorner is commiting a pretty bad offence
will dvla tell who bubbled? hard to tell, you shouldnt fear anything but who knows these days

Nope, they don't care where it's kept as long as it's "off road" when SORNED.

I'm not sure why the OP felt they had to contact the DVLA anyway, the car had nothing to do with them so why not just chuck the "junk" mail in the recycle bin?

you sure? I've been SORNing vehicles since it started and I don't remember ever being asked where the vehicle was kept
  • I remember putting the postcode of where i kept the vehicle but as the SORN is ongoing i have not had to mention that again.

I would have sent it back as not known at this address. You dont want them registering vehicles at your address.

If they are aqueaky clean then they wont have anything to worry about.

First I've heard of it! Insurers like to know where the car will be parked most of the time but I've never had to tell the DVLA where we've kept any of our 4 SORN'd vehicles.

@Op: DVLA won't say anything other than they've had the mail returned. Don't worry about it, we used to get logbooks and sorn letters here too from the last guy who lived here and we'd just send them back.

Easy way to deal with unwanted post - just write RTS in big letters on the front and shove it back in the post box (or leave for the postie). RTS = Return To Sender. Usually the posties will write it on the envelope when they see "no longer at this address" on the envelope so they'll know what RTS means.

ive looked in my drawer here at work and i have sorn sheets going back to 02 /06 so even im now confused
im still pretty certain you had to tell swansea where the cars were kept as at one time as i had some cars in a storage yard and was always concerned that moving them down to work even on trade plates opened me up to possible problems
