Is my child account likely to still be open more than 10 years later?

I had an account opened for me when I was 12 (I'm 26 now) with Alliance and Leicester and as the title suggests, I was wondering if it's likely to still be open?

  • The account will more than likely be set as dormant, but you can get at any funds in there easily. Talk to Satander, who now own A&L, and they'll set you on the right path.

    Hope that helps :)

There's a contradiction there, saying "easily" and "Santander" in the same breath.

Our club had an Alliance & Leicester account. We even wrote to Santander asking them not to make it dormant as we still wanted it. They disregarded the letter, and then took 6 months of arguing even to acknowlwedge that the account existed. It is now open again, but 3 months on and many phone calls and reminders they still haven't sent a new cheque book.

    Good luck ! :)

Ha! Yes you're quite right. What I meant to say was it should be easy :rotfl:

    Ignore the posts above.

Visit a branch with Passport or driving licence will be pretty easy to find the account.
  • It will depend on how the account was opened.
If it was Mum re child then it is the mum who must claim the money.

If it was originally opened in the name of the child then the advice already given stands.

    Ignore that post.
Tried that. "We can't deal with a dormant A & L account at a branch - you need to write to Santander."

Santander: " contact the branch where you opened the account"
Me "the branch doesn't exist. It was an A&L branch and you closed it"
Santander "write to our customer relations section"
Me "I thought you were customer relations?"
Santander "We have no records of this account"
Me "It is account no. XXXXX"
Santander " contact your local branch"
Me "see previous letters. I am now officially complaining that you have stolen my money"
Santander " what is the account number?"
    Me " XXXXXX"
Santander " That is an old A&L account. Write to our Old A&L account section"

    etc etc etc.

    Still trying.
