Hello people
I normally go to Kwik Fit who use something called 'synthetic' oil and use a unipart filter to replace mine. The cost last year was about £27. I was wondering if there are any other places you would recommend.
I'm also lost with what synthetic/semi-synthetic mean

Blackadder: Baldrick, I have a very, very, very cunning plan.

Blackadder: Yes it is.
Baldrick: Hmm... that's cunning.

I use National who are a bit cheaper and 10 per cent off if you book on line

There's mineral, semi-synth and fully-synth and different grades (thickness), it depends on what car you have and what year????0

Different oil viscosities or ambient temperature ranges, your hand book should tell you which to use.
Figures from my car handbook :-
0w-40 = temperature range -30 to +40 C.
10w-40 = temperature range -20 to +40 C.
15w-40 = temperature range -15 to +40 C.
So unless you planning a trip to the arctic 15W - 40 is perfectly adequate for UK climate.0 -
Last time I did an oil and filter change it cost me £13 and that included a new seal for the drain. This country is called Great Britain. It would be called Amazing Britain if it wasn't for people like you pulling the average down0

It's a 1.4i (1997) petrol. I read on National's site that they recommend flushing the engine after removing old oil 'to remove sludge and tar'. Is that needed?
I presume that if I go for the cheap one (15/40) it will not affect the way my car drives or the wear on the engine...Blackadder: Baldrick, I have a very, very, very cunning plan.

Flushing should not really be necessary especially if the car has had regular oil changes, modern oils contain cleaning agents that prevent build up of sludge etc.
15/40 oil will be fine and will not affect either the handling or engine wear.0 -
15W40 may be OK for you, but I think it's a bit too 'thick' and would go for the 10W40, you didn't say what model car you had. If it's a Ford with a Zetec engine then 15W40 is definitely NOT OK, you need to choose wisely0

It's a nissan almera sorry
yep it's had yearly oil changes every april so I don't think it'll need a flush
How can you tell by the model whether it would do better with a better oil?

Just checked and your car should take 10W30 but says 15W40 is OK too but that would be a little too thick for my liking. The 10w40 will be OK though and it's a semi-synthetic so quite a good oil, that would be my choice but it's upto you, you can't go wrong with any of those choices.0
