A friend of mine is thinking of moving to Newton Abbot, South Devon. Has any-one any suggestions as to areas that are desirable and areas to avoid.
Ideally she would like to live with easy access to shops and public transport.

Areas to avoid? Umm, how about all of it?
Seriously, it does have a very chavish reputation. I certainly wouldn't want to live there. Wasn't it once voted 'ugliest town of Britain' ?0 -
It's not one of the best places to live,to be fair.Certainly not the most chavish either (that's Torquay on a Saturday night).
Wouldn't know were to advise actually in NA itself, but would be worth looking at areas on the outskirts.
As for shops, well it depends what she wants. It's certainly not a place you do much shopping in lolIf women are birds and freedom is flight are trapped women Dodos?0 -
How about Kingsteignton, which is the next town over and probably a bit nicer (and cheaper) than Newton Abbot? I work in Newton, but I'm not really local so can't tell you too much about it. I know Buckland is full of ex-council houses, so if that's a problem for you, then that's a place to avoid. Aside from that, probably places further away from town centre are better.marlasinger0

I know N. Abbot well, as a previous poster said avoid Buckland if possible, Ogwell is quite nice, (its just outside N. Abbot) the areas of certain parts of Milber and Aller are also not bad at all. Personally I am not too keen on Kingsteignton.depends what part, like most places.
The village of Kingskerwell is nice, I used to live there, its about 3 miles from N. Abbot.
Hope this helps, anymore questions just ask. When man sacrifices the Love of POWER for the Power of Love, there will be peace on earth.0 -
Does she drive? Does she have kids? Budget? Size of accomodation needed? They deem him their worst enemy who tells them the truth. -- Plato0

Thanks every-one especially Gatita for the information, I will tell her, it is beginning to sound as though this location may not be the best option. They are retired and still drive but want to be in walking/public transport easy access to the town centre as this may become important as they get older. They have thought of some of the villages or coastal towns but feel they may have fewer advantages. Their budget would be about £200,000 and they would hope to have a modern or well modernised house with reasonable sized garden and three + bedrooms (to allow for family visits)0

I'd say Totnes would be a much nicer option, and just about achieveable on that budget. They deem him their worst enemy who tells them the truth. -- Plato0
