I have an NTL broadband modem with an ethernet & USB port. I want to wirelessly network a laptop & a desk top pc. My laptop is wifi enabled. My desktop has USB ports but no ethernet port. I purchased Netgear router WGR614 & a usb adaptor to plug into my desktop. The problem is I can't seem to set up the Netgear router as the online manual says the initial setting up of the router needs a wired connection. I can't connect to it with a wired connection as my desktop has no ethernet port. Is there any way round this? I currently connect to NTL broadband by usb connection (though it does have an ethernet port). Do I need to buy something else to make it all work or do I need to try to return the router & buy a different type? Any help would be appreciated as I am a complete novice with setting up a network.

Buy one of these for your desktop and use it to connect to your router with an ethernet patch cable (assumed already provided with router).
