Thinking of buying a new build - any advice?

I'd avoid new builds -
1) Quality is generally poor, both fittings and workmanship. The favoured 'tool' on-site is the chain-saw. The combi-boiler will be made from Bacofoil.
2) Housing density is much greater than older estates
3) Rooms sizing is just at legal minimum (rabbit hutch) with tiny, prison-like windows to get the overall E-value up while skimping on wall insulation.
4) The mandatory 'affordable' houses on new estates often go to unsavoury types with 'shameless' lifestyle

My rents bought a new build (which I still live in now) in 1998, it was done by a small private firm who no longer exist. But the house is lovely, well made - not had a problem with it!!
Fast forward to 2013 and I'm looking to buying a new build home at the end of the year, or Q1 2014 with my missus. Hopefully I won't have anywhere near the bad experiences some of you lot apparently had..
