Southern Electric are introducing Standing Charges

  • October last year (2012) I signed up with Brit Gas. (tempted by free credit and fixed price till May 2014) but wish I hadnt. Never dawned on me the disparity of what I would be forking out eg I am very low user of Gas (Im not nesh, the ambient temperature suits me until it is PROPER cold, electric shower, electric cooker, dont cook much anyway, dont EAT much anyway, no tv on all day, ). With Southern Electric it was an "all in one unit cost" which worked out good for me, if I didnt use gas ther wasnt any cost for that day, or week or MONTH whatever, now with Brit Gas its a constant cost which is disparate to the extent of EXTORTION. eg £1.47 gas usage= bill of nearly 23 quid (2 months) £4.21 gas usage = bill of nearly 37 quid! (quarter) I want to get shot of these gits. I need to get back to how things used to be.

It is not British Gas or Southern Electric that are doing this. (Southern Electric now levy standing charges). It is Ofgem. Direct your letters at them, not the suppliers.

It is the suppliers, the standing charge can be zero, nothing, naught, zilch

Some suppliers are zero, others have chosen to up the SC to rake in more money

Ofgem only says standing charge must be shown on bill, not that is has to be charged in real cash

Technically true, but complete rubbish at the same time. It is Ofgem, not the suppliers who are to blame. Why would a supplier limit themselves to a single mainstream tariff when their competitors have four? How does that business strategy work?
