public liability cover

I have just done a search on comparethemarket for public liability for myself: a self employer sole trading plumber and the result shocked me. The lowest cover was around £480 for £2million and I still have a £250 excess.

Does anyone know of a better place to search for comparisons??
I am sure fellow tradies I spoke with a few years ago (when work was plentiful) were paying around £150 a year.

Any advice would be much appreciated

  • There is no price comparison site for business insurance - or at least there wasnt last time I checked.

    CompareTheMarket = a broker Your Insurance (part of Towergate)
    Confused.com = a broker Simply Business
    etc

    Just unlike a normal broker they present the results in an aggregator type manor

    At present your best bet is to approach a broker directly and get quotes from them. Often, with trades being more complex than personal insurance, by speaking to them and discussing things you can get a better (or at least more accurate) price than the online forms that are a bit too much one size fits all

    £480 is about the going rate for £2m for a plumber, it's a high risk trade for insurers as well as the general damage claims they get from other building trades they get the far more expensive water and fire claims.

    There used to be a cheap scheme with Zurich through Corgi (Gas Safe now), try them if you qualify or speak to a local broker (Not Swintons)

    Have you tried the ones such as directline that don't appear on comparison websites?

    Also, a local broker could help.

    I have public liability with Direct Lineand they are by far the cheapest.

    I work with a self employed plumber and he pays over £500 a year. Plumbing next to asbestos removal is the highest rated trade as it involves heat work (soldering).
