Safe Style UK & Land Registry Search - is this right?

I had a cold caller to my house last week and they wanted to flog me a new front door. Arranged an appointment for a quote and as a result of this Safe Style UK saw fit to carry out a Land Registry search on my property - are they allowed to do this, and more to the point why would they want to do this on the basis of me wanting just a quote for a new door!?

As far as I know by paying £8 you can do a deeds search/view on any property in the UK, they probably have some sort of corp access.
Why, escapes me sorry.
We did this to check the boundary of the farmhouse next door to my daughter only last week.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Yes, I'm sure they are allowed to do this as the information is publicly available. I assume one reason that they would do this would be to ensure that you are the owner of the property and have the right to authorise the work to go ahead. I remember a friend who was a doubkle glazing salesman telling me about a situation where a tenant had gone ahead and had a window replaced without the landlords permission - the landlord then kicked off and demanded compensation because his original wooden sash window had been replaced with a plastic alternative without his permission, arguing that the company concerned hadn't taken reasonable steps to ensure that they had the correct permission to begin work.
EDIT: Possibly they could also use info from the deeds to inform their quoting strategy - I think the deeds would show if the property was mortgaged or not - maybe they would assume that if there was no mortgage on the property they could quote higher as they would perceive that the owner had more spare cash?0 -
The information held on the land register is publicly available as mentioned by earlier posters. We deal with land and property in England & Wales but not the rest of the UK.
You can search online as mentioned. Professional customers will often sign up to and use our online business e-services which includes similar functionality as well as a number of other services used in conveyancing.
The reasons for someone to check the land register are very wide ranging but the suggesitons of ilikewatch seem quite plausible here.“Official Company Representative

Is it an older building? Are they possibly checking if the building is listed or has any cravats that mean the door must be same style etc?0

They do it because they will only operate to the way they want to operate. A rough idea please means they will insist on coming into the property they will spend the ritual 3 hours dancing round the discount handbag, they won't go until either you or they have capitulated, they want this data so that they can be sure that if its a joint tenancy or a tenancy in common that all parties who are involved are present which goes part of the way to ensuring that they will get a signature. They have alledgedly been economical with the truth to get that foot through the door in the first place previously.

Indeed - don't forget the deeds will also show them what you paid for the house in the first place, so that will give them a rough idea of what your mortgage might be and what you can probably afford. Their price isn't set on what it costs them + a reasonable margin, its set on what they think they can get away with.
Ignore the nonsense when they tell you that its half price/buy one get one free/upstairs free/limited offer/manager special/end of month special/etc. Supermarkets do bogofs as loss leaders, as they want you through the door, and hope you'll buy other none-discounted items that are over-priced to compensate. With a window company, you buy once and then don't come back for a long time - what is the point of a loss leader?0 -

So getting back to the nitty gritty of this post the OP's reply shows just how these tricksters, and I stand by that, persuad folks to part with their hard earned, ie;
Op didn't want and wasn't looking for a new front door or whatever.
Was persuaded to take a quote.
Now embroiled in issues of access to personal info.
And he is now convinced that he want's a quote for a new front door, as in the bold bit.
Remember the anti drugs thing?
