Just moved into a new pad and there are 6 halogen spot lamps (similar to these things: http://!!!!!!!.com/3brtnn ) in the living room/kitchen.

We have noticed that by the end of the evening the room is getting quite warm.

Do halogen spotlights use enough energy to do this? (or could it be us just getting used to the new flat)

    Are halogen lamps energy efficient?

    thanks guys

If the bulbs are GU 10's that could be 300 watts you are burning ( around 10pence per 3 hours use ) so no they are not energy efficient

These lamps do get very hot, I have them in my bathroom and they warm you up quickly!

In the winter it isn't so much of a problem as the heat generated will not be wasted as it will help heat your home, more of a waste in summer when the heat isn't required.

I think they are ideal for bathroom and kitchen use where crisp, bright light is needed, but probably overkill for the living area (considering the energy use)

mr16 low voltage much cooler brighter longer lasting and now we have on test some 10w low energy spots that seem to give same lumen output as 50w lv and cooler still
  • You can get energy efficent gu10 lamps!

Go to ebay and search for: gu10 energy effient lamps

    You can get:
LED gu10 lamps (only 2w each , not much light off them)
Energy effient gu10 (comes in 7w,9w or 11w) Good bit of light off them, not as sharp or bright as the normal gu10's.

LED's cost about £5 (you can get them in maplins)
the other low voltage ones cost between £5 and £8 each
Yes they are expensive but they will pay for themselves!

i took some pics last night as i couldnt work out if they are gu10's or mr16's.

but they are 50w.. so definately burning upto 300w on full blast!

NO! they are not GU 10's they have the wrong shape pins..the 24 v on then suggests there should be a transformer lurking somewhere.

you have mr 16 LV bulbs significantly cooler and better that GU10 check your transformer as you may be able to dim them also consider putting 35 or 20 w bulbs in

    thanks for your reply ozskin.
we have them on a dimmer (that buzzes)
but i am looking at trying to get maybe some LED types as they are a lot more efficient. (and i am sure they should exist)

if you do get led ones, only get 1 or 2 to see what they are like (i found them not very bright!)

Some LED lamps do not work with 12volt transformers.

    excuse my ignorance, *blush*
but do they have the same "socket" as the ones above, i'e two prongs of metal as shown in the first piccy. or would i have to change the whole power block part as well (i noticed that in the loft, each light has a electrical block next to it).

the ones you mention sound better, as mine are surely eating up a fair amount of power (and i really should be aware of my carbon footprint, since it's the fashionable thing to do) ;-)

During the 80's it was fashionable to carry a 'filofax' like delboy trotter..

...now we look back at those people who were stupid enough to follow that trend as a bunch of muppets !

I fear the same will happen with this 'carbon footprint'.
Trust me when I say this " as a uk citizen, your carbon footprint is almost zero already "
And, it is definitely zero when compared to the 1,313,973,713....thats 1 billion 313 million chinese people, the 1,027,015,247....thats 1 billion 313 million indians, and 298,444,215....thats 298 million americans to name a few pumping millions tons of carbon into the stratosphere.
Remember, there are a mere 60 million people in the uk, so nothing we do will have a big impact on anything.

...It's a bit like being at a card school where every leader of a country is there and they are all smoking a huge cigar except us....and we feel guilty for letting go a small trump !

I disagree. If everyone did a little bit then it will all add up...theres no point in saying well so and so arent doing it so why should I. Ok personal wind farms and solar panels are a huge waste of money but getting different light bulbs and turning things off at source rather than leaving on standby is going to save money with very little much hassle
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!
