17 inch laptop advice please

Looking for a new laptop and going for a 17 inch this time (not really planning on carrying laptop out of house but want portability in the house)

I am a teacher and use the laptop for loads of school work from simple Word docs to presentations etc (sorry no full stops as one of several issues!)

Also use for music and video and occasional gaming

Wanting to future proof as much as is poss and also ensure will be powerful for anything I am likely to throw at it

Have been looking at

http://www.dell.com/uk/p/inspiron-17r-se-7720/pd?oc=n0017s30&model_id=inspiron-17r-se-7720

(had two Dell machines myself & kids have one each)

Also saw the following but not sure how they compare

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/sony-vaio-e-series-sve1711r1eb-17-3-laptop-15301387-pdt.html

(think Sony is lesser spec???)

Advice on above or any other suggestions welcomed please
If only I could stop finding good bargains on this site, I would save a fortune! :rotfl:

  • I have recently been looking for laptops and found that eBuyer.co.uk was a good place to buy if you are looking for a good deal.

That said, I am still looking :/

    Good luck.

out of those two the dell is by far the better option for your stated usage due to it including a dedicated graphics card as the sony only has intergrated intel hd3000 chipset which sucks more than ....... and struggles with most 'proper' (non flash based) games

as to other suggestions, a few quetions would help with our suggestions
how much do you have to spend,
would slightly reduce performance matter if you could save some money, or do you want the best performance within your budget?
is gaming performance more important than raw processing power?
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

If you aren't in a rush to buy then there could be some good deals coming up next month when Windows 8 is released.

I'm hoping there will be a glut of Win 7 laptops around at discounted prices.

Alternatively, have a look at the Dell Outlet site which offers returned items at a lower price. Stock changes daily so you would have to be quick.
  • Thanks for the comments and suggestions.

    Gonzo 127,
I'd say that price ie 700 absolutely top of budget. Gaming less vital than raw power. as i have a much lesser spec 15"dell laptop at present then slightly lesser power i guess will still b more than what i have.
    Hth

Probably need to sort something sooner rather than later also to buy with 16mth int free cc so can spread cost over more months.

Will look at other suggestions meantime.

If decide to go with the Dell(not a bad choice) you can still get a 10% discount by adding this code M88QQ8Q682XS1Q at the checkout. That saves you £67.90.
