    all dimmers AFAIK hum.

you'll notice that the um is louder the lower the light.

remember the dimmer works by reduncing the current reachin the bulb, but its on top of a wire thats binary, i.e. on/off, so full or no power. the hum is a by product of the reseistance to t he current

    That buzzing is normal.

Higher quality and more expensive dimmers may buzz a bit less though they still buzz.

yes the noise gets louder, the more gentle i want the lighting..
    hmm! annoying!
its when the lights get dimmer that i want the room to be quieter.

oh well, if thats the way it is to be :-(

your only option is i think to build a little box arund it and close it when you want some piece and quiet...;)

We have a dimmer switch for the lounge lights in the home we just moved into.

The thing buzzes when it is on. is this normal?

It is only a feight buzz so nothing major, but in a silent room it would be noticable.

    any ideas?

I notice from another thread you have 6 halogen lights, is the dimmer switch the correct wattage??

sometimes dimmer switches buzz if they have energy efficient bulbs in them, if you have these perhaps you could try a normal bulb.
