Pay someones cheque into my account.

Is it possible to pay a cheque into my account,for someone that doesn't have a bank account.

    No i dont think it is, the person could open up a basic account or a savings account and post the cheque to be paid in
  • Provided the cheque is in your name then yes you can pay it into your account. If its not then no you won't be able to, the person whose name it is in can only bank it into an account in their name.

  • It used to be possible for the person named to sign the back of a cheque which effectively allowed anyone to bank it. Since the receiving bank had no idea who the named recipient was, nor what their signature looked like, it was wise open to abuse.

    The law was changed and for many years now all pre-printed cheques have had "Account payee only" printed, which prevents this.

    In practice if your child receives a £5 cheque from Auntie Flo and the child hasn't got a bank account of their own, the bank probably wouldn't bother returning it if it was paid into the parent's account of the same surname, especially if it was paid in by post or an automated deposit.
