Potential Problem with Surname?

  • Sorry to be pedantic, but your signature should read "bought", not "brought".

"Brought" = past tense of "bring".
"Bought" = past tense of "buy".

As for your problem, add another supporter for the marriage solution.

You might well be right, but in my experience most, if not all, organisations insist on a deed poll before they will change your name on their systems.

Funny, you can get a passport without one. And a bank account.

I couldn't get a passport without one 15 years ago and neither could Rosiew below. Things might have changed but if anything they are probably even more stringent now.

    They're not. It's not necessary.

As I said before, they probably aren't, but most organisations insist on them and unless you've got the time and patience to argue the case you don't have much choice but to comply. So I agree with you that legally they are not necessary but practically they make life a lot easier. As it says on the Direct Gov site:If you have already changed your name

IPS will need to see documents showing the date of and reason for the name change.
If you have changed your name more than once IPS will need to see evidence of all changes. The documents must show a clear link between each change of name.

So you have to send them something and a deed poll is probably the easiest thing to send.

Is it still possible to get a document from a Comissioner of Oaths? I did this when I cahnged my name (several decades ago). I swore an oath and came away with a document, cost me much less than a deed poll would have done.

Oh well, you can take a horse to water but you can't make it drink. I thought this was a money saving site, that's all. So now you do at least admit they they are not necessary, as I said. Thanks for finally agreeing with me.

Changing your name by deed poll is so easy! and all it will cost you is the price of a few sheets of decent paper and some printer ink! just go to a site like http://freedeedpoll.org.uk/
fill in the details, print it out, sign it and get it witnessed!
Whether it is necessary or not is debatable, but it certainly easier!

I always thought that you could get a new passport if you have never had one before, but you cannot 'change' a name on one, or a bank account, or a driving licence, or anything else, without a document showing a link between your old and new names. Be that a marriage certificate, a decree absolute and birth certificate or a deed poll certificate.

I lost my deed poll certificate, so I nipped into my local solicitors. A stat dec and £5 and it was done. It's acceptable for both a passport and a driving licence and I shouldn't need it again now I have them.
