Moving house - best way to switch suppliers?

Hi,

We complete our house purchase on Tuesday and I'd like to know the best way of switching supplier when moving into a new home. Currently the owners have electricity via EDF and gas via Scottish Power. We'd probably like to either have both with EDF, or both with a completely new supplier. I've never switched supplier before, so have no previous experience of how/ when to do it.

Get the house move over and done with first, worry about switching later. You'll no doubt be put on their standard variable tariffs so, using one of the comparison sites do a check to to see which is the cheapest supplier for both gas and electricity. Armed with this info either follow the instructions via the comparison site, or go to the supplier site directly and begin and follow the instruction there. Really isn't that difficult.

Also don't forget to check the topcashback and/or quidco sites for any cashback deals.

Agree with the last poster, wait until you have moved in.

On move in day note the meter readings, ideally taking photographs of the meters. Then you need to contact the current suppliers, pass the opening readings and set up accounts. As long as you sign up for a standard tariff* you are then free to switch without penalty.

*beware being duped onto a tariff with Early Termination Charges.

You don't need to wait once you have moved in as a switch can be initiated from there and by setting up an account with the current supplier, you avoid any transfer objection which a previous occupants debt could cause in error.

You can't switch supplier unless you have a supplier ;)

So tomorrow when you move in, take meter readings, contact the existing suppliers and set up accounts.

Then you'll have a supplier which you can switch away from if you like :)

As above, you are in a deemed contract with EDF and SP from day one when you use the supplies, so you can commence a switch as soon as you register with them. Attempts to switch before a move invariably end in tears.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Ok, thanks for the replies. I'll call EDF and Scottish Power and make sure I'm put on standard tariffs and then check out my options for moving.
