Can this be right for a disabled couple?

I'm not meaning to be nosy, the last thing I wish for my uncle who is physically disabled is that his benefits are reduced but after hearing from him the benefits he is receiving, I've become envious because of what my mum is receiving in comparison and she has a disability too.

My uncles income support had stopped years ago as he had savngs and he recieved only high rate DLA and his wife recieved income support aswell as DLA and incapacity as she has learning difficulties.

Now after reasonng with DWP, my uncle has recieved a lump some back payment of £7000 of income support and his income support has been restarted aswell as incapacity benefit, recieves £400 IS/month, £320 IB/month and about £500 DLA/month and his wife recieves the exact same bringing his household total income to around £2400/month.

Like I said, last thing i am is nosy but this sounds excessive to me especially the fact that he gets IB aswell as DLA. Presumably when DLA becomes PIP he will be reassessed and Iv tried explaining to him that DLA will become PIP and that he will soon be assessed for ESA but don't think he's taking me seriously.

So is what he gets a reasoanble amount of benefit for someone with back problem that walking is difficult, his talking incomprehensible at times and he has some degree of mental difficulty?

Sounds about right to me, he gets IB which is a work replacement benefit based on his National Insurance contribtions, DLA to cover the extra cost of disability and income support to top-up his IB to the amount the law says he/wife need to live on.

Sounds about right, it's cases like this that give benefits a bad name.

I think DLA should be means tested.
  • And I'd like to bet you cannot get DLA - hence comment. I would love to have my normal life back and not need to claim, but it will now never happen.

if that was aimed at me then I believe if we are cutting other benefits and turning down operation because of lack of money then we can't afford to give money to those that have a lot of savings.

To give money to MP's, millionaires etc is wrong if at the same time you are making cutting to people with less than they have.

You make it sound as if it's compensation because you have a disability not that it's meant to help with mobility.
  • The thousand pounds for DLA you would have to disregard really, as anyone who met the criteria would qualify for this, be it the poorest person in the land or one of the Royal Family.
But, in the long run I beleive the DLA (or PIP) will be phased in to the Universal Credi, alongside the Housing Benefit.I would think this household in about 4 years time will probably be receiving half of what they are now.
If it is there, people will claim it.

I think means testing of DLA is "on the way"

I am not saying I agree with that - But I think pensions and DLA are most certainly to be looked at for those with means.

Remember 2 years ago - if we said CB would be means tested the idea would have been ridiculed, we now have that.

ESA - To some extent (if not in SG) is now dependant on family income after a year etc.

i'd bet that theres not a whole lot of millionaires that jump through the DLA's hoops for an extra £80 a week

I'm glad DLA is there for poorly people like you and my hubby to help through a bad time xx
Some people don't realise just how much that bit extra comes in handy for all the extra things ill and disabled people need.
