Grants for the elderly?

My 88yr old grandad lives in his own house still. His windows are single glazed and we have noticed that the frames are rotten, my cousin has also brought to attention that grandads boiler is really out of date and needs replacing.

Also where he hasn't been upstairs in his house for years as he can't use the stairs, the bathroom is in a really bad state and needs relpacing and in all the uperstairs rooms it needs a big clean up and decorating, as he needs one of us to live there to care for him now and this space would be needed for his carer.

I've heard you can get grants to help with windows and heating, not sure about carers living space. But i really wouldn't know where to go and who to ask about grants to help him.

Does anyone know?

Thanks

Before we are able to help we need to know your grandfather's financial circumstances as many grants are related to this.

Would you mind telling us what his income is? Does he receive any benefits?

You never know we might find him some more money on a weekly basis!
  • Do you have a Care and Repair in your area? They are often able to advise and source funding for these types of circumstances.
    Happy, Happy, Happy!
  • You'll get loads of advice on here, but I would suggest that a fast track method of finding out what help is available (because these days it can also vary enormously from area to area) would be to contact Adult Social Care at your local council, and ask for them to carry out an assessment of your grandfathers situation and circumstances. Alernatively, Age UK would be able to do an assessment although in some areas their services may be stretched and the council would be quicker http://www.ageuk.org.uk/?ito=1945&itc=0&gclid=CP2EksuqqLICFQMNfAod-TAAgQ
  • Hi OP

Did your grandfather serve in the Forces at all? If so (and at his age it is probably quite likely) it may be worth looking into the benevolent funds available to ex-services members. My FIL had a complete heating and boiler system fitted and a large grant for double glazing - he was ex-RAF - so definitely worth looking into.

There may be some info on the turn2us website through the 'grant search' tab. Good luck :)

I'm sure excactly as my aunt deals with his finances more, she has just asked me to look into this to help her out. He gets pension from a plan that he'd payed into, I know he's not really poor that he has to watch every penny and struggle to pay bills but he's not loaded either, think he has some saving but dont think its very much. He owns his house.

    Thanks

The length of time won't matter. You could contact SAAFA - https://www.ssafa.org.uk/ - or https://www.rafbf.org/43/need-our-help.html depending on which branch of the forces he served with.

Your Grandad is 88 years young, bless him!

Is he claiming Attendance Allowance? If not, he should be. This is a very useful non-means-tested and non-taxable benefit and certain grants are available if he was in receipt of this - a new heating system, for example.

Eligibility for the Warm Front scheme
You may be eligible for heating and insulation improvements up to £3,500
The scheme is now targeted at people on certain income-related benefits and living in properties that are poorly insulated and/or do not have a working central heating system. You must own your home or rent it from a private landlord.
The Warm Front scheme is only available in England. Other schemes are available in the rest of the UK (see ‘More useful links’).
