Water butt pump
Hi, I have 2 water butt's running off my shed, in the winter, I attach a hose to the tap and empty the water down the drain, otherwise the rain water will over spill and eventually flood behind the shed.In the summer,I empty into a watering can and water plants, but that takes quite a while, so I have been thinking about a pump, I have seen the Hoselock one's they are about £50, seems a fair bit of money, I was wondring if there was a cheaper alternative.
Could I use a pond \ fountain pump?
Could I use a central heating pump? As long as I didn't need to submerge it, I think this might be an option. Then I might be able to pick up something cheap on ebay.No idea water sort of pressure I want though?
Any advise please
Thanks
Steve

You could use pretty much any water pump, just make sure you have the right connectors and use it properly. Usually water butt pumps are submersible, so other pumps would really want a tap from low down in the tank. Also some pumps can be damaged by running dry - proper butt pumps cut out automatically.
In short, though, know your pump and take care and you ought to be fine.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -
Thanks for that!
I was thinking rather than having a submersible one, I would get one that sits next to the Water Butt's, that way I could put a hose into the Water Butt and get the water out that way.
I guess I migh need a filter, I know that the Hozelock one has a filter, but if I can use any pump that gives me a lot more options.Might also look fro 12v ones, so that I can run them off a car battery, as I don't have power in the shed.

If you don't go for the submersible option, remember to either lag pump and pipelines very well or drain them as in winter freezing will cause damage.
I've seen steel pipes split due to this."We could say the government spends like drunken sailors, but that would be unfair to drunken sailors, because the sailors are spending their own money."

You do not say how you will power the pump, but be sure to plug in & use a residual current breaker [RCB] at any socket you get the power from
