Hi all im looking to get a yamaha yzf r125 soon for my first bike and have been looking around (auto trader, ebay) but want one from a dealer,
im just wondering is it worth getting a new (£4200 aprox) or a 1 or 2 year old with low milage (£3200 aprox). Let me say i know nothing about bikes so would not know if there is a fault and want the best deal for me.
thanks

I'd consider whether you'll stick with a 125. Once I passed my test on a 125, it wasn't long before I wanted a bigger bike. I only had it for 2 years then sold it. Considering depreciation is probably higher initially (£1k + from your figures), I'd look at second hand. Prices seem to level out after a few years and a decent one will always bring decent money. I know they look the business, but 4k seems a lot for a first bike, unless you're going to keep it?
If you're not confident or knowledgeable, stick to a reputable dealer and take a friend if poss? There seem to be a few people 'modding' these to 150cc or more and IMO you don't want to inadvertently end up with something like that.0 -
If you are looking to get one as a first bike to gain experience and eventually take your test then I would get something like a Honda CG125 or a Honda CBF125 or a Yamaha YBR125. They are much cheaper to buy even new than the YZF (the CG125 is not available new now but there are good secondhand ones out there) with the CBF125 costing £2500 new and the YBR is £2499. They have a two year warranty so if you buy a used one at one year old you still have the peace of mind of the remainder of the warranty.
If you are under 24 I would seriously consider getting a move on to take your module 1 & 2 tests before the 19th January 2013. A new testing regime comes in on this date which will have a big impact on those under the age of 24."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"

At the moment, Yamaha are doing 0% interest with a £99 deposit.
I agree with the above poster. The bike licence laws get very complicated next year, so get passing your test quickly.0 -
or even consider the direct access route0

thanks for your replys, my current thinknig is that i want to keep the bike for many years (well hopefuly) as its only to get to work and back and when i need to go out, dont really need a powerful bike just someting to keep with with traffic easily on a 60 mph road and yes i do want it to look good, and running costs seem to be cheaper than the bus (£600 per year) and only going up, just the setup thats a killer, but evan if its a bit more i dont mind as can go where i want when i want,
btw im 30, 31 in 2 months.0 -

Definitely used, you'll want to move onto something bigger when you get your test and the lower the value the more it will hold its price....I bought and sold my 125 [Kwak EL] for £1400 in 20030

£4200! Ouch, mine was £3000 3 years ago.0

You say that now....but never having rode before I can almost guarantee that will not be how you feel later. You will either like it or hate it. If you hate it, you will sell again and loose a lot of money if you buy new.
If you love it, you will very quickly grow tired of just 125cc. As others have said, I would suggest getting a used naked bike and see how you feel. If you wish to continue to ride, you can sell that without loosing too much money and move onto something that you really will enjoy.0
