Help with Oyster cards please

Thanks for the information I will do that when I arrive.marksmith99 wrote: »If you show them the railcard when you buy the Oyster they will load the discount on. Then when you use the card each fare will be reduced by the rail card discount. Although I'm not sure you get a discount if used during the morning or evening peak periods.
From what I have read the discounts don't apply at peak times as you say. I will avoid travelling at those times.0 -
Sorry - a Family and Friends railcard cannot be loaded on Oyster - reason being that an Oyster is an individual ticket whereas F&F is a group one.
What it can be used for is to buy one day off peak (paper) travelcards at a discounted rate.0 -
Hi guys
Going to London for a day trip in October, will be using friends and family railcard to get train there.
There will be 2 adults and 2kids aged 5&7. Would be looking to get day tickets for tube, likly to be zone 1&2 only. Is it cheaper to get 2 adult full price off peak tickets and let kids go free, or is cheaper to try and buy discounted day tickets because of the railcard (and if that's cheaper how do I buy them)
Thanks

A daily off peak travelcard for use for travel in zones 1-2 is £7.00 per adult and 1-2 (and 1-6 zones TC is the same price) is £5.60 per adult with the f&f railcard (click on railcard tab in link). A zone 1-9 childs TC purchased after 10am (not 9.30am like the adult off peak) using the F&F railcard is £2. So what I understand is that you would save £1.40 on a zone 1-2 TC per adult so £2.80 in total for two adults but pay £2 for a child (think you have to have one child travelling on the F&f?) who would normally be free, so in effect are saving 80p, but you have to purchase your TCs and travel half an hour later than the usual off peak start time of 9.30am due to the the child TC having to be purchased after 10am from the train/tube station ticket office.
There are bigger savings for the daily travelcards using F&F for Tc that allow you to travel all zones eg. 1-9 is £7.60 instead of £11.60 and 1-9 including Watford Jct is £10 instead of £15.20 but if you are staying in zone 1-2 accomodation then you don't require this.0 -
Thank you, that is really useful. It looks like the saving won't be worth the hassle, will just use the off peak adult day tickets. Am I right thinking its better to go through the large staff barriers with the kids rather than trying to get them through the automatic gates?0

You go through the lugguage/pushchair barriers at the stations and the children just go through with you.0
