Isle of Wight, Christmas & New Year - any good?

we normally go to Cornwall for New Year & really enjoy it. looking at a break that covers Christmas & New Year this time & the prices for Cornwall are a bit scary!
so i'm now looking at the IOW, we've never been before so hoping for a little guidance. we'd stay in one of the main towns as we'd like to be in walking distance of pubs/shops etc. prices seem quite reasonable for a sea view apartment for 2 & a quick look at ferries shows about £100 return with the car.
any thoughts on what IOW has to offer over Xmas & New Year? main towns still pretty much open but everything else closed? (similar to Cornwall?).
thanks

Not stayed over christmas but went to IOW (nr. Newport) this year, loved it. Everyone we met was so friendly and helpful and there was so much to see and do would definitely go again. Used our tesco club card points to pay for the ferry (thanks to peps on here).Slightly bitter0

Earlier in the year I got an Isle of Wight Tourist Discount Card - just noticed that they have now got ferry discounts listed for visitors and residents - 10% off wightlink routes - iowtouristcard.com0
