Tried to open a current account but was rejected?

I currently bank with NatWest and tried to open another current account at Barclays today. I was asked will my salary go through the Barclays account and I said no. The staff then said she will only be able to offer me a savings account with no online banking and a cash card that I can't use to make online purchases.
I want an additional current account with online banking facilities but don't want to close my current NatWest ones. Any advise on how I should approach it next time?
PS. I want a new current account so all my Matched Betting transactions doesn't have to go through my main account.

Try Nationwide, they are usually good for Matched Betting. However, it might be prudent to first check your credit files - - sounds like you might have something on there that banks don't like. In which case, you need to deal with that one first.0

When I opened an account with Barclays a few years ago, I never mentioned a current account, I just said that I had exceeded my 85K limit with my current bank and needed a new savings account with online access. They couldn't see me fast enough. Within 15 minutes, I had an ISA, Monthly Saver, Savings account and Current account (apparently needed for the online access), along with several freebies (literature, pens, binder, that kind of stuff) in a big Barclays carrier bag. This was several years ago mind, things might have changed since then. Now, across all my Barclays accounts, I have a total of about £8.
At one point they rang someone and said they didn't have any stock of PIN Sentry, then they grabbed one from a colleagues desk and gave me that instead. Amusing, I thought.0 -
They can see that they will not make any money from you and have decided that if you do not want your main banking with them that they do not want your business.DiiFMaritime wrote: »I currently bank with NatWest and tried to open another current account at Barclays today. To be honest I can see their point.
However is there any reason why Nat West will not open a second account for you?0 -
There's loads of other banks out there who would offer what you need.
Also if you are looking for online why just not apply online instead of having some snotty person at Barlcays fob you off?
Unless there are issues on your credit file you should be able to get a current account elsewhere. The other alternative should you have poor credit is to open a basic bank account elsewhere eg Easycash at Halifax.0 -

Probably not - - but see belowThere's loads of other banks out there who would offer what you need..
The OP wants to use their account for Matched Betting. Although this is a million miles safer than what the banks are doing day by day, there is plenty of evidence that they punish people for doing it (mortgages, loans, overdrafts refused etc).
2nd account with same bank is therefore not a preferred option, and any account with one or two other banks are out because they can become arsey about it. For what reason I hear you ask - - - none, is the answer. They just can be, and they do, because they are bankers.
Nationwide are quite good about it, and given the OP doesn't bank with them already, would be my top suggestion. Unless, as I said before, there's anything untoward on the CRA files.0 -
Have you tried opening another 1 with Natwest? I have 2 with Santander. Only one has a salary paid into itWendy0

I told Barclays I'd switch salary when the account was up and running.0

I opened an account with Barclays in Feb 2012 and as part of the sign up process, they also gave me a pen, statement binder, cheque book holder, offered me regular saver, ISA, car insurance etc and i didn't have to say that I had exceeded my 85k
They even tried to offer me a new barclay card.0 -

Thanks for that, will request the statutory reports to see whether it tells me if anything on there is a problem. Also if you are looking for online why just not apply online instead of having some snotty person at Barlcays fob you off?
I did try to apply online and they sent me a letter asking me to go to the branch to arrange an appointment and you are right, she was very snotty
Once I manage to open the additional current account, I might send them a [STRIKE]snotty[/STRIKE] email to say thanks for rejecting me, one of your competitors has now got my business:o0 -
Barclays are ok just remember if you want an answer and can't get into a branch be prepared to sit on the phone to mumbai spelling out every sentence.0
