Warning - Thief, magnet and string in Derby

Second-hand account from a friend of SWMBO. The friend in question is a credible source and we have no reason to believe she was making it up.
Sitting in a cafe in Derby, she noticed a handbag being pulled across the polished floor to the table next door.
The cheeky woman tea leaf was using a magnet on a piece of string and legged it when challenged.

My friends (in Glasgow) witnessed a woman entering a restaurant then pretend to tie her shoe. Whilst crouched on the floor she throw a piece of string with a hook to pull a handbag from under a table.
Police were called and they said it was common!"Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?" (Douglas Adams)0 -

I worked in an IT centre in Birmingham some years back. It was a quiet morning with only a couple of students when a young lad came in and out of the 52 empty desks chose to sat opposite a lady who had been there for a while.
I was chatting to one of the teachers when we noticed the lad had something under the desk and was sliding the ladies handbag over toward him. We called out, he ran and we chased him but he was close to the door and managed to get out before we could stop him but at least he never got the handbag.0 -
I had my handbag stolen from under a table in a pub - it was by my feet, there were about 13 people around the table and not one of us saw a thing.0

Any rare earth magnet should do the trick. I've just tried a hard drive magnet on the wife's handbag and it will easily drag it across the tiled kitchen floor.maninthestreet wrote: »Just how strong was that magnet??
So saying the handbag dragger has to hit the handbag near a metal strap holder or the clasp. If the bag has no metal bits then obviously the magnet won't work.
