My Proton Impian needs a cambelt change. Local indie doesn't think the water pump is separate so it isn't worth doing at the same time. Anyone know any different?

  • Don't know that car specifically, but that was the case for my old Audi 80 TDI's; the water pumps of which were driven by one of the auxiliary drive belts.

You may be able to identify the water pump by tracing pipes back from the radiator, to see if at least one of them goes into a metal lump mounted to the engine that is driven by a belt.

If said belt is not visible because it's completely enclosed by a cover, it's the cambelt.

    Maybe upload us some photos?

The 1.6 Proton Impian has a Mitsubishi 4G18 engine (it's essentially the same mechanically as the Mitsubishi Carisma/Space Star/Volvo S40/V40).

This engine doesn't drive the pump from the belt to the best of my knowledge, but when I had the cambelt replaced on my Space Star (same engine) I had it done at the same time anyway as the labour was no extra and the car had done 110,000 miles.

Ok thanks. Would a belt for one of the above fit? May be a little cheaper...

I don't see why not -- the part is identical as far as I know.

However I did a little digging after I posted the above and it appears Proton switched to their own independent design of engine (CamPro) in 2006, so if your car is newer than that it may be a different engine.

Also, only the Space Star 1.6 (or mid-2000s Lancer 1.6) had that engine -- the Carisma and S40 1.6s had the 4G92 which I do not believe is the same.

Yeah its a 2005 and definitely the 4G18. Someone on the proton forums is telling me the belt drives the pump but he thinks its the 4G92.

    4G92 is a newish design (late 90s I think) -- can't see Proton using that :)
